Thank you all very much! I hope to finish my Great Planes Viper 500 this winter. OS 55ax and one of those newfangled radios.

That viper will be a fun plane. I had a Q500 years ago with a nelson 40 quickie motor and it was really really fast with that motor but almost too fast to use as a sport plane, i put a super tiger 50 in it and it slowed it down to a much more manageable all around fun plane. The 55ax will be perfect. Some guys were runnin piped 32's on them and that was a good combo too. I been thinkin about gettin another one as i have a jettfire 46 sittin here :-)

Not much to the airplane. I may have to beef up the rear fuselage. Have read they break in half on rough landings. Did you use v tail or rudder configuration?

Hey Roger Happy Birthday- good to hear some of you young kids getting to enjoy the "Golden Years" ( or is that the "Brass Years" ?) Just kidding partner, every age is Golden.

Sounds like you are going to have a "Rocket", that AX 55 will be a hauler.

Look forward to seeing you and the new rocket.

Best,

Tom

Thanks Tom. May have to revise decision on OS 55. Too much torque-not enough rpm. Maybe I should put the 55 in the Kaos and the .46ax in the Viper?

Stick with the 55 Rog. It will turn a 10-10 as fast as the 46 will turn a 10-7 or 10-8 and still give ya great static thrust for quik take offs. Theres no prop/ ground clearance for an 11" prop anyway. The 55 will give it great take off power and be an honest 140-150 mph plane. After having a couple Q's i really think the 55 will be perfect for ya. My Nelson powered Q went in the mid 190's but take off performance sucked with the 8-10 1/2 plylon props. I did beef up the rear fuse by running long strips of 1/4" x .050 carbon fiber down all four sides of fuse tho you would have to pull the covering off to do it now. I wouldnt bother with a seperate rudder as you still get decent rudder action from the ruddervaters on the v tail. Awesome plane!!

Oh......and run the same 55ax 10-10 combo in the kaos, u will dig that as well :-)

Thanks for the info Dave. From what I've read most q500 planes use 9-8 or smaller props. Too small for the 55. A 10-8 should be about right. HP rating the same for the 46 and 55. Weird

Yep, if you are gonna race and want every last mph the 9-8 work good but even droppin an inch in dia from a 10 to a 9 the static thrust ya lose is amazing. Trust me a 10-10 on that 55 will kick ass and on a 4lb airframe vertical will be very unlimited. Over the years ive found os hp figures to be worthless.
